The town that said no to houses on a sledding hill
In 1993, eight housing units were proposed for Stokes Hill, the hill local kids have used for snow days for generations. Neighbors, elementary school students, a local artist and the environmental group STEM (Save the Environment of Moorestown) organized to save it.
That tells you a lot about the area around Strawbridge Lake and Stokes Hill. People here care about what the town doesn't build.
Green space within reach
- Strawbridge Lake Park
- Along Haines Drive and Kings Highway. Volunteers have worked on the shoreline for years. The township replaced the park's playground, which had been there about 40 years, with new equipment, including a swing built so an adult can face a child. Local Rotary clubs have paid for benches with commemorative plaques.
- Jeff Young Park
- Lighted tennis courts marked for pickleball, softball fields and a recreation center.
- Kendles Run Acres, Frank Fullerton Memorial Park and the Boundary Creek Natural Resource Area
- More open space around town, for walking and for a break from the car.
What it means if you're buying
You're paying for access as much as for the house. Parks and preserved land are a big part of why people stay in Moorestown.
Homes close to preserved land tend to stay close to it. Ask about the specific lot, since "near the park" can mean different things on different streets.
Check the flood zone and drainage on any home near water. It's a standard question I'd ask anywhere.
