Gloucester County real estate is full of opportunities to explore the area’s rich history. The Gloucester County Historical Society exists to facilitate this exploration for families, whether they are full of youthful enthusiasm, or more relaxed in their mature years. Their motto is, “Unlocking our past by preserving and sharing our collections for the benefit of present and future generations.” The Hunter-Lawrence-Jessup House Museum is one of the primary examples of how they have encouraged historical preservation in the area. The Museum is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. On the last Sunday of each month, it opens at 2:00pm and doesn’t close until 5:00pm. It is also possible to book a private tour outside of the regular hours. The Museum advises visitors to call ahead in cases of inclement weather to be sure that they are open.
Since the Museum is located on Gloucester County real estate, their current exhibit is called, “Gloucester Abbey: Downton Style Fashions,” and it will run through the 6th of January 2016. This exhibit features ladies’ fashions during the time period covered by the popular series, “Downton Abbey,” including dresses dating from 1910 through the 1930s, and several wedding gowns. Every kind of accessory imaginable is also on display. In the military room there are now multiple World War I memorabilia exhibits that correspond to the same Downton series timeline. Everything from original WWI posters to examples of technology of the time, is on display for visitors to see. Admission is always free for members, but for non-members there is a $5.00 fee. While there is a $1.00 fee for children who are 6 to 18 years of age, those who are younger than 6 are free.
