If you only know Palmyra from driving over the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge, you've been passing one of the best outdoor spots in South Jersey without knowing it. Palmyra Cove Nature Park sits right at the foot of the bridge on the Delaware River, and I send buyers there all the time. I'm Jerry Mac with Keller Williams Realty, and after 23 years working this area, it's still one of my favorite places to take a walk.
What Palmyra Cove Nature Park Is
The park covers about 250 acres of tidal cove, river shoreline, wetlands and small pools, including a beaver pond. It's owned by the Burlington County Bridge Commission, and it's free to visit. The outdoor trails are open from dawn to dusk every day.
Here's the part I love. This land was once a dump site for dredge spoils and leaf waste. According to local hiking guides, the Commission stopped that around 1999 and let nature take it back, and today it's full of birds, turtles, frogs and, yes, beavers. It's a great example of a place that came back on its own.
Trails and the Cove Trail
The park has miles of wide, flat paths that are easy to walk, jog or push a stroller along (trail guides cite roughly 9.5 miles in all). The one most people come for is the Cove Trail.
- Distance: about 0.9 miles each way, or roughly 1.8 miles out and back.
- Where it starts: beside the nature center, near the foot of the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge.
- What you'll see: the Delaware River on one side and the tidal cove on the other, with overlook decks and boardwalks over the wetlands.
- Good to know: the trail is flat, but it can be muddy in spots. It ends at private property, so you turn around and walk back the way you came.
Wildlife and Birdwatching
Palmyra Cove is an eBird hotspot, and birders love it. The park's own site shows photos of osprey, yellow warblers and hermit thrushes, and trail signs list the animals that are often spotted. Turtles sun themselves on logs, frogs call from the wetlands, and if you're patient you might even see signs of beavers around the beaver pond.
There's also a famous resident up above. Local reports say a pair of peregrine falcons has nested on the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge since 2008, and the nature center has run a webcam so people can watch.
The Environmental STEM Center
Next to the trailhead is the park's Environmental STEM Center, run in connection with the Palmyra Cove Environmental Education Foundation. It's open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM and is free, and it's a great stop for kids who love science. The park also lists programs like a summer day camp and a monarch butterfly workshop, so check its calendar before you go.
Park Rules to Know Before You Go
This is a protected nature area, so a few things are not allowed: no dogs, no bikes, no drones, no smoking and no swimming in the cove. I always mention the dog rule, because my wife and I are animal people and I know how many of you would love to bring a four-legged friend. For a dog walk, nearby neighborhood streets and parks work better. Restrooms and water fountains are not available on weekends, so plan ahead.
Living Near Palmyra Cove
Having a place like this minutes from home is a real lifestyle perk. If you live in Palmyra, you can be on the trail in a few minutes. Many of my buyers tell me that a quiet river walk after work is what finally sold them on the town.
- Living in Palmyra covers the bridge commute, schools, Broad Street and home prices.
- Palmyra Harbour and Riverfront are the waterfront communities close to the park.
- Riverton and Cinnaminson are the neighboring towns, each with its own charm.
