Medford Lakes sits in the middle of Medford Township. Here are the neighboring towns buyers often compare it with.

A lake community in the Pines

Medford Lakes calls itself "the year round summer playground," and it started that way. The Medford Lakes Development Company was formed in 1927, and the community grew as a lakeside summer colony before becoming its own borough on May 17, 1939. Today it is a year-round town built around 22 lakes and lake communities, and the entire borough sits inside the New Jersey Pinelands.

The town is known for its log cabins, with more than one in ten homes built of imported cedar, often with big stone fireplaces. The lakes and recreation facilities are managed by the Medford Lakes Colony, a community association, so it is smart to ask about lake access for any home you are considering.

What makes it special

  • Lakes everywhere. Lake living at a more approachable price than many waterfront areas.
  • Log cabins and cottages. A mix of storybook cabins, cottages and newer homes on streets called trails, named Lenape, Algonquin, Mohawk and more.
  • Small-town schools. Nokomis School (PreK to 2) and Neeta School (grades 3 to 8), then Shawnee High School.
  • Historic charm. St. Mary of the Lakes, a 1931 log church, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

1928Colony Club Pavilion built on land donated by the development company
2 canoesthe most that may support any Canoe Carnival float
  • Canoe Carnival. Held on Lower Aetna Lake since 1931, during the first week of August. Neighbors build hand-crafted floats on canoes, a king, queen and court are announced beforehand, and the winning float is named afterward.
  • Revolutionary War roots. Charles Read's Aetna Furnace made cannonballs from local bog iron for the Continental Army, and the Aetna Lakes carry that name today.
  • Doughnut town. Medford Lakes is one of 21 New Jersey boroughs that sit entirely inside another town.
  • Protected Pinelands. The whole borough is within the Pinelands, the nation's first National Reserve, set up by Congress in 1978.
